For the best corrosion resistance on steel we would recommended using a triple plating process with copper as the middle layer.

HOW DO NICKEL PLATING SALTS WORK

Nickel plating salts must be diluted to required solution volume, which will be used in electroplating process. It involves electrically coating a layer of metal on another metal surface. This process needs an electrical charge.

Essentially, the user applies an electrical charge to a container of nickel plating solution. This charge causes the chemical reactions necessary for depositing the brass metal on the surface of the material the user wants to plate with nickel.
